OCD Q & A

What is obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by intrusive, unwanted thoughts and behaviors performed as a result of those thoughts. According to statistics compiled by the American Psychiatric Association, OCD affects as many as 2-3 percent of Americans.

Researchers believe that OCD may be caused by brain differences. There may also be a genetic component, although it’s possible to develop OCD without a family history.

What are some indications I might have OCD?

Knowing the signs of OCD can help you decide when to seek help for yourself or a loved one. Symptoms are categorized in two ways.

Obsessions

Obsessions are recurring thoughts that cause anxiety, fear, or distress and won’t go away. Some examples of obsessions include:

  • Fear of becoming contaminated by the environment or contact with other people
  • Being overly concerned with order, precision, or symmetry
  • Fear of losing something important
  • Fear of harming yourself or others
  • Upsetting sexual images or thoughts

Many people with OCD can recognize these thoughts as abnormal or unhealthy but cannot control them.

Compulsions

Compulsions are behaviors or thoughts you perform in response to obsessions. Some examples of compulsive behavior include:

  • Perceived need to organize or straighten objects
  • Repeatedly checking locks or appliances to be sure you’re safe
  • Excessive hand washing, showering, or personal hygiene routines
  • Perceived need to count or repeat, with a focus on specific numbers
  • Constant need for approval or reassurance

If you find yourself behaving in ways you find troubling, sitting down with a therapist is a great place to begin.

What are some treatment options for people with OCD?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a powerful treatment for OCD. The process involves exposure to ideas or circumstances that usually provoke a compulsive reaction. This exposure occurs in a therapeutic setting and focuses on helping you learn how to process and react to the thoughts that develop.

Over time, CBT trains you to respond to triggering thoughts without performing ritualistic behaviors. Eventually, you learn how to acknowledge disordered thoughts when they occur and respond to them in a healthy manner.

Medication can also be helpful in controlling OCD. Antidepressant medications are sometimes a good fit, although it can take time to find the right medication and dosage for your unique set of needs.
